Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month: What Is It and Why Is It Important?

The loss of a loved one - especially the loss of a baby - can be a very taboo subject. To some, talking or hearing about loss is “too morbid” or “too depressing”. Positivity culture is especially trendy right now so it makes sense that people don’t want to talk about things they associate as negative but the fact of the matter is that talking about baby loss is important.

1 in 4 of us experience a pregnancy or infant loss. Imagine your friend group, coworkers or extended family members in a photo and think about that statistic - everyone is bound to know someone who has experienced baby loss or someone who unfortunately will in the future.

October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. Did you know that Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month was first declared in the U.S in October 1988 by then President Ronald Reagan? In his Presidential Proclamation, Ronald Reagan stated "Each year, approximately a million pregnancies in the U.S. end in miscarriage, stillbirth or the death of the newborn child. National observance of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month offers us the opportunity to increase our understanding of the great tragedy involved in the deaths of unborn and newborn babies. It also enables us to consider how, as individuals and communities, we can meet the needs of bereaved parents and family members on work to prevent causes of these problems."

For me, Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month is a chance to bring about awareness of how common such loss really is. This month is to share our stories. This month is to uplift research to find out why so many of us are losing our babies. This month is to bring attention to the policy changes that can be made to better care for families during pregnancy, the immediate period after loss and beyond.

I hope that everyone will share something this month to spread awareness and I hope you’ll talk about loss with your loved ones. Let's break the silence together.
