High Risk Diary: Placenta Results and My Other Diagnoses

Today we received the results from the placenta pathology report. For the most part we did not really get any new answers but what we did find out is that there was Placental Abruption. Placental Abruption is a rare but serious condition where the placenta either fully or partially detaches from the uterine wall. In many cases it happens suddenly and is fatal, which was sadly the case for Onyx.

My doctor said that what most likely happened was that my cervix dilated prematurely (Incompetent Cervix is the official term) and because the amniotic sac started to protrude out, the placenta got infected (Placental Abruption diagnosis). I’ve heard a lot about Placental Abruption from others who have lost a child but in all of their cases, their baby passed away in the womb in the third trimester. Onyx was born alive at 20 weeks and 4 days. Because the amniotic sac broke so early, I also have a PPROM (preterm premature rupture of the membranes) diagnosis. My doctor doesn’t think that the Placental Abruption is the reason that I went into premature labor, rather the main cause was an Incompetent Cervix. So many diagnoses yet so many questions still left unanswered.

We have an appointment with a perinatologist in November and will hopefully find out more about my diagnoses then. Regardless, my arms are still empty and we are coming up on Onyx’s 1 month anniversary this Sunday.
